Installation sessionsavepath

Installation gives error on the first step - "session.save_path Directory is not writable.
Corrective action tried:
I have sent by FTP all files, having changed the permissions on ALL folders(removing the read-only indicator), and including sub-folders.
History of installation:
First installation attempt gave this same error. I deleted all files on server, made changes on local machine and re-sent. The same error was noted.
Requested assistance:
Please could you indicate what the session.save_path is/where I change its permission. Or, have I misunderstood something more basic??
