  I am helping set up an internet high school and I want to persuade my management to use Atutor. But they are already operating a chat system for each class hosted by another project.
  
  I know they will want to keep it because it has things like voice chat, powerpoint display and browser synchronisation. The Atutor chat is fine for me but other teachers will want to use the existing one.
  
  Could I put an additional icon on the homepage of each course to open these external chatrooms?

  for atutor 1.5.2 you could create a module that will allow instructors to place the icon on the home page.
  
  full documentation will be available when 1.5.2 is released in a few months.

  Workaround for now?

  Joel thanks that will be great when it arrives. But I need to get them going on Atutor by end of (calendar) year or else they'll get settled witrh other stuff. Is there a workaround for the time being just to put a link somewhere prominent?
  
  Could I put an announcement perhaps with a text link to the external site? Can I make the announcement sticky so it doesn't get lost under others?

  You could use 1.5.1 and hard code a few links. Most of the changes can be made to include/lib/menu_pages.php to change tabs.
  
  Or you could use a nightly build of 1.5.2 and set that up as a demo. The final release of 1.5.2 will be in Dec.
