    Install problems phpsafemode yes

    Hi..

I am trying to install the 1.5 on my host xtreme-hosts.com but they do not want to set php_safmode to off as they are using shared servers. ;) Is there any ways around this problem, will it be fixed in the full version? Thanks,
    Arne H.

    safe_mode must be off

Safe_mode off is a requirement, and thus is not something to be fixed. You can use ATutor with safe_mode on, though any features that writes files to the server will not function (and possibly some other features).

    Hi,

thanks for you reply. Here is the answer I got from my hosting company. Does this mean I can not use ATutor as it will not install with safe_mode=on :( . What file can I edit to disable this check, I am initially intending to use the question / survey part.

I am sorry but there is no way to remove PHP_SAFEMODE on our shared servers.

And I highly recommend that you never use any hosting service which offers this, as it is a major security problem, when using php on shared servers with safemode off.

SafeMode prevent other users on your server from reading, changing or even deleting your files and folders in your account.

    safe-mode off

ATutor needs to be able to read, change and delete files.

From a security perspective we've gone to great lengths to ensure that security holes are not opened when safe_mode is off. Paranoia is usually the reason for turn safe_mode on, and perhaps rightly so if clients on ashared server are using applications that do not attend diligently to security issues.

Unfortunately, you'll probably not be able to convince your ISP that security is not going to be a problem. If you really want to use ATutor, my only suggestion is to move to a server where it is not enable. Most ISPs are able to deal with safe_mode off, and do have it turned off.

For more info about safe_mode see:
    http://ca.php.net/manual/en/features.safe-mode.functions.php

You can install ATutor, and tests will work if you do not need to uplaod files to attach to test question. During the install you may need to create directories manually, that would normally be created by the installer.

    Using ATutor with safe_mode on

I've documented what needs to be done to install ATutor when safe_mode is turned on, and what's not going to work once installed. See the following thread

I am new to all of this and I have a online class that suggested me to install the aTutor program.I am very frustrated but I do not wast to quit becasue I paid for this class. And I need this class to help me for what I am aspiring to do in life. I am very new to computers and the lingo and meanings as well.

    Install EasyPHP first

First get EasyPHP installed. You can download it from the atutor.ca downloads page.

    http://www.atutor.ca/atutor/download.php

Remember the login and password you create for MySQL when you install EasyPHP. While it is running an icon will appear in the system tray in the bottom right corner of the screen. Right click on the icon and explore the options available.

Tutoring in basic computer skills is beyond the scope of this forum. If you are having trouble with the lingo, try using google to search for the terms, or ask a classmate for help.

You should be trying to install ATutor 1.4.3 or 1.5 (not 1.3.3)

BTW where are you taking this course?
