Cannot get past install step 2

  Cannot get past install step 2

  Install dies at step 2: Installation.
  
  Things to describe:
  Operating system ATutor is installed on - linux
  ATutor version - 2.2
  Patch #s applied - none
  ATutor theme name - unknown
  PHP version - 5.3.28
  MySQL version - 5.5.38-35.2
  Webserver & version - Apache version 2.2.27
  Copies of error messages - "Unable to select or create database atutor"
  Changes to default settings - none
  Web browser being used - FireFox, Chrome
  Joomla version 3.3.2
  
  Step 2: Database
  "Please enter your database information:"
  
  after entering it,
  get the following:
  Error
  Unable to select or create database atutor.

  Fatal error: Call to a member function real_escape_string() on a non-object in /home/jdixonco/public_html/jm311/ATutor/include/lib/mysql_connect.inc.php on line 141

  User has all privileges.
  
  I have installed many Modules in to Joomla, but can't figure the problem with this one.

  as above.
  
  I commented out as suggested.
  This times I was able to get through to Step 7 "Done" but on clicking "Login" button, I get the following error now.
  
  Fatal error: Call to a member function addError() on a non-object in /home/domainname/public_html/jm311/ATutor/include/lib/mysql_connect.inc.php on line 167

  When you uploaded ATutor to your server, did you upload the bundle then unzip on the server, or did you unzip first then upload to the server?
  
  The latter produces error such as this.

  Uploaded, and uncompressed on site - no errors on the install.

  addError() is a standard error message function. If it fails, that would suggest there's some broken code somewhere.
  
  I would suggest you start over with a fresh download.
  
  Is this on a hosting service (which one?) or are you managing you own server.

  OK. I deleted the atutor database, and folder.
  I downloaded another version, this time 2.2
  I uploaded the tar file, and extracted it in to a folder.
  CHMOD'd and everything installed fine, - right up to "Login" - again.
  Same error.
  
  It is on shared and specs are above.
  
  I'd be happy to give access so you can see it for yourself.

  We've made some adjustments to the installer, which we're hoping will resolve the real_escape_string() error people have been experiencing. Can you test it on the server that was producing the error and let us know how it goes.
