Videos get stuck when I try to pause them

I am having a problem with the videos on flowplayer. Anytime I pause the videos, it sticks and I have to close the browser and re-log in to get it working again. Anybody else have this problem? Any solutions. Thanks so much.

If you are asking for help, provide lots of detail so problems can be reproduced.

    Things to describe:
Operating system ATutor is installed on - Windows NT 5.2

Apache 2. We've tried Firefox 9.0.1 and IE 9. But we need it to work for IE8 for the people who will be using it. They also experience the same glitch in IE8.

    Hope it helps.

Re: Videos get stuck when I try to pause them

No, that's not quite our issue. There isn't any degradation near the end or other ill effects when near the end of the video. Pause/Play works fine, but if you try to navigate away from the page, nothing happens- the status bar reports 'transferring data' ...

This happens on FF 9 Windows ; IE 9 ; FF 3.5 for Mac.

It appears that the request for the next page is queued up behind the video file download- the browser goes to a link clicked on while the video file is downloading, after the video file has finished.

This might actually be a desirable feature in some class settings- forcing the student to at least wait as long as the file takes to download, though not be viewed, before the student can navigate on.

But for our purposes- we have some big video files- it would make more sense for the viewer to navigate between the the pages when a video is still in midflight.

Safari does not have this issue- it allows the user to navigate away from a page whether the video is playing, paused, or still downloading.
Does anyone know how to tweak flowplayer to get the other browsers to behave more Safari-esque?

Re: Videos get stuck when I try to pause them

That link is actually there as a backup if the player does not load. You can click the links to open the video in a local media player.

If you want to remove it you can edit it out of:
    /mods/_standard/flowplayer/module_format_content.php

    Around lines 31 to 39.

Re: Videos get stuck when I try to pause them

HI Greg, thanks for your help with this.

This is not just the one link to the video file - any link on the page does not work (whether it leads to another page, to the homepage, to an totally different website), if the page includes a video. The link destination will be followed eventually, once the video is finished loading; but in the meantime, the user is trapped on that page.

We did needto remove that link to the source video file as well - so thanks for pointing us in that direction; but our original problem, in which the user is unable to navigate elsewhere from the video enabled page while the video is being loaded by the player - remains.

Re: Videos get stuck when I try to pause them

Unfortunately we have not been able to reproduce the problem ourselves in any browser. It sounds like its something specific to your system, perhaps a setting, perhaps the video itself, a browser bug maybe. It's difficult to say without being able to see it happen.

We'll have to leave the investigation up to you. Maybe start by reviewing what the flowplayer community has to say about the problem. If you can help us reproduce the problem, we'll look into it further if it is an ATutor, rather than a flowplayer related issue.
