    New install with old content

If you are asking for help, provide lots of detail so problems can be reproduced.

Operating system ATutor is installed on -
    ATutor version - 2.0.2
    Patch #s applied - none
    ATutor theme name - default
    PHP version - 5.2.9
    MySQL version - 5.0.67
    Webserver & version -
    Copies of error messages -
    Changes to default settings -
    Web browser being used -

The installation guide offers steps for a new install or an upgrade over an old install. Our old install (v1.6.3) is in directory ATutor - it must remain active. I've got the new install (v 2.0.2) in directory ATutor2.

Is there an easy way, during (or after) the installation process, to get the course content from our old install into the new install?

Is there a help file I haven't found?

    Regards,
    Starlingweb

Re: New install with old content?

Backups are probably your best bet for copying courses to a new install. Generate and download them from the old install (Manage>Backups), then create a course in the new install and upload and restore them there using the same tool.

Search for "backup" or "import" or "export" in the instructor handbook for more details.

Re: New install with old content?

When I recently upgraded from 1.5.4 to 2.0.2. I wanted a clean install so this is what I did to point to my old data:

    1. Copy the live version (database, content directory, source code)
    2. Change config.php.inc in the copy to point to the copied database and content directory
    3. Upgrade the copy
    4. Test the upgraded version to make sure the upgrade worked
    5. Install a new version of ATutor in a separate directory
    6. Change config.php.inc in the new install to point to the copied/upgraded database and content directory
    7. Once again, test to make sure it all works
    8. Switch directory names so the new/upgraded version is the live version

I didn't take my live system down and didn't want to lose any logins created during the upgrade process so I exported the AT_members data where the creation_date >= (the date/time I had copied the database) and then imported it into the upgraded database. I knew I didn't have any instructors modifying courses during that time so I wasn't concerned about losing anything else.

If you do a practice run ahead of time, this process can go fairly quickly. I had to do source code customizations so it took me a couple of hours. Otherwise it would have probably taken less than a half hour.

For me, this was easier than backing up and restoring each course but that would depend on your specific setup and skill set.

Re: New install with old content?

I hope that something similar will work for me. I have a 1.64 that's been running since 2008 doing articulation testing pre-tests for High School students coming to try to test for credit at our college. We now have a need for a box to allow self-registration for submissions for literary works to be judged for inclusions in a campus publication. When I went to look at the box I find that the RAID controller is in cardiac arrest and probably needs to be replaced but the box is not worth the cost so I need to move everything to a new box BUT I can get to the directories and files but I cannot log into the Atutor to do a backup of anything. I need to create a new set of directories on a new box and then install a new version of Atutor and somehow get the old data into the new version. I am not concerned with logins, just content data. Should your method work here????

    Thanks.
