HowTo set up default settings for everybody in a course

HowTo set up default settings for everybody in a course

    Hi atutor team,

we tried to set up a default course preference scheme for our course to be valid for everybody unless they change their setting manually. This means, if a new user is logging in, he should get the course default setting. We are not able (;-) to set exactly this default scheme at the moment:
If I am instructor and I change the course preferences, and I use the function "Save and apply these preferences to This Course" or "...to every course",
does this mean the personal setting for this user,
or the setting for all users who enroll to this course?
How can we set up default course-related preferences?

Maybe we are just to stupid ;-)

    cheers

    stefan, axel

Set your personal prefs as course default

Set up the course preferences as your personal preference settings first, then apply them to the course by clicking "Save and apply these preferences to This Course". You can go back and change your personal settings later without affecting the course defaults. See the HowTo course for more about prefs...

    Try it, then ask questions....

    it is not working

    Hi again,
    thanx for your reply.
I tried to set up exactly what you suggested before I wrote the support request and I tried to follow your instructions again after reading your reply.
If I login as instructor and set up the course preferences "for this course" and "for all courses" there is no effect if a new user is login into that course.

    What can we do?

If you want to give it a go:

    http://193.174.81.161/atutor
    Apache User: admin, passwd: tennis

    Atutor:
    Instructor: user: autor, passwd: tennis
    admin: admin, passwd: tennis

    Thanx again...

    Stefan

    See Howto

You are going about it the wrong way. Follow the instructions in the ATutor HowTo course.

    Instructors>>Instructor Tools>>Course Default Preferences

    I did that too...

    Hi again Greg,

sorry but I did that too. I used the Instructors>>Instructor Tools>>Course Default Preferences screen and hit the link
"Save current settings as course default preferences."
After logging in with a absolutely new user the default preferences took no effect. The new user got his own standard preferences for that course.

    ??

    sorry for the trouble...
    thanx

    Default prefs broken

The ATutor default prefs were changed in 1.3.2 in error. We'll change them back in the next release.

The override preference was turned off in the ATutor Default preference settings, which are applied for new users.

You can fix the problem by logging into MySQL and adjusting theme 4 in the theme_settings table, from "0" to "1".

    It should look like this:
    s:13:"PREF_OVERRIDE";i:1;

Be careful not to break the rest of the preference string...

    No change to the preferences

    Hi Greg,

sorry again, but we changed the string according to your reply and nothing changed.

After that, we installed the new version 1.3.3. on the server and still no changes to the default preferences.

After that, we also changed the theme_settings - theme 4-string in the mysql table according to your reply - it is still not working.

The rest of the preference string was always intact.

We would appreciate any further ideas...

    Thanx in advance.

    Stefan

    Copy prefs from courses table

There seems to be other issues with setting course default preferences, that we can't deal with right now. We'll try to have this fixed for the next release (1.3.4).

For now set your course default preferences as you normally would. Then copy the prefs string that gets saved in the courses table, for the course you saved defaults for, into the theme_setting table for theme 4.

This will be the default preferences for your system.

    further infos

    Hi again,

Thanx for your support on that request.

Your advise to copy the preference string from the course table into the theme_settings table works only
    for menues.

The links (sequence links) are not stored in the preferences of the user and not stored when I copy the pref. string. Also: When I log in with the same user (autor) again, the language allways changes back from german (user setting) to english.

    Add-on to the last message

    Hi again,

the language problem I stated in the last message

"...Also: When I log in with the same user (autor) again, the language allways changes back from german (user setting) to english..."

is no longer a problem. This was our fault. We didn't realise the possiblity to change the language in the control centre of the user.

    sorry for that.
