New students can create courses

  • 2007-09-13 11:48:56

    New students can create courses

"No courses found. Browse existing courses or create a new one."

Using a Master Student List, new users are greeted, upon logging in the first time, with the above text. It turns out they are created as Instructors.

How do we fix this? We want them to be created as students.

    Things to describe:
operating system -Windows NT 5.2/windows server 2003
    version of ATutor -1.5.5
    versions of php -5.2.4
    version of mysq l -5.0.45-community-nt
    webserver & version -IIS
    copies of error messages -n/a
    changes to default settings -
    web browser being used -IIS
and anything else relevant -I like cookies

Re: New students can create courses?

    Hi,

The message might be a bit misleading, but they are indeed created as a student.

You may change the message yourself by logging in as admin --> System Preferences --> Languages -> Editor
    and alter that message.

Re: New students can create courses?

Thanks for the thought, but while
    "No courses found."
    "Or"
    "Browse Courses"
    and
"Create (lots of things, none of them courses)"
all appear in that list, "Create new courses" does not.

    Also,

I checked the USERS list and found that the new signee is listed as an Instructor under "Account Status."

    Strange, no?

Any help would be great. I think we're running a newer version of MySQL than is officially supported, could that be a cause? I am not sure where these rights tie in.

Re: New students can create courses?

    Hi,

I cannot recreate the problem. I created a "Master student list" through admin login, and then registered with the id/pin which were on my "master student list". The accounts I have created are Student accounts, I did not encounter your problem.

A few settings you may want to check are under admin-->system preferences:
    Allow Instructor Requests (Default: Enable)
Auto Approve Instructor Requests (Default: Disable)

Re: New students can create courses?

That last bit was exactly it, Harris.

Thank you so much. We solved this last week thanks to your advice; I realized no one had posted here to tell you it worked.
